Implementation of Product Diversification Through the Utilization of Fish Scales at Poklahsar Mafaza Majalengka

Abstract

Poklahsar Mafaza Majalengka is located in Majalengka Regency, an area where fish scales—by-products of freshwater aquaculture and fish processing—have not yet been effectively utilized. The objective of this community service initiative is to enhance the utilization of fish scales as raw material for value-added products and to improve the knowledge and skills of Poklahsar Mafaza members in creating diversified products based on fishery by-products. The training methodology comprised four stages: (1) observation and preparation, (2) training implementation, (3) application and mentoring, and (4) evaluation and sustainability. The community service activities—focused on product diversification through fish scale utilization at Poklahsar Mafaza Majalengka—demonstrated improvements in several aspects of the group's empowerment. These included enhanced production knowledge and skills, optimized use of appropriate technology to boost production capacity, an increase in the variety of products, and a better understanding among members regarding sanitation, hygiene, and product packaging. Following the mentoring process, Poklahsar Mafaza Majalengka members are now able to independently and optimally utilize fish scales as value-added raw material, thereby supporting product diversification and strengthening product competitiveness.
