Abstract

Technology and engineering vocational high schools carry a higher fire risk than general schools because practicums involve open flames, high-power electrical equipment, and flammable materials. A preliminary survey at SMK Negeri 1 Cirebon revealed limited knowledge of fire classification and extinguishing media, unscheduled extinguisher maintenance, incomplete evacuation signage, and the absence of an emergency response team. The outreach was held on 13 February 2026 to improve the school community's knowledge and skills in fire safety implementation. The activity was evaluated using a descriptive qualitative method. The population comprised 65 twelfth-grade students of classes XII A and XII B, all participating; the sample was 12 purposively selected informants. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussion, and documentation, then analysed using the Miles and Huberman model and validated through source and technique triangulation. The findings show a shift from the misconception that water suits every fire towards selecting media by fire class, greater accuracy in the extinguisher operating sequence after repeated practice, and stronger awareness of the need for an emergency response team. Fire safety in vocational schools requires continuous cultural embedding, not merely the provision of protection facilities.
